As April gave way to May, Spotify Nigeria witnessed a musical battle with several artists vying for the top spots and chart records.
Here are some of the most significant developments on Spotify Nigeria.
Young John Leads Album Chart
Two weeks after its release, Young John’s debut album, “Jiggy Forever” has finally attained the acclaimed No. 1 spot on the Spotify Nigeria charts. It did that by overtaking Shallpopi’s “Shakespopi.”
“Jiggy Forever” has also amassed over 43 million streams on the platform. While impressive, it still ranks below his 2022 EP., “Love Is Not Enough Vol. 2” which has 112 million streams as of May 2.
Ruger, Bnxn, Young John and Shallipopi Vie for Weekly Music Charts.
Spotify Nigeria’s Weekly Music Chart for the last week of April was dominated by four artists: Shallipopi, Young John, Ruger, and Bnxn – the latter two collaborating on an album. Shallipopi’s “ASAP” retains the top spot with Ruger and Bnxn’s “POE” and Young John’s “Bahamas” securing the second and third spots, respectively.
The most represented albums are Shallipopi’s “Shakespopi” and Ruger and Bnxn’s “Romeo Must Die” with seven songs apiece in the Top 50. Young John’s debut album “Jiggy Forever” also made a notable impact with four of its tracks landing in the Top 50. Both Shallipopi and Buju (formerly known as Bnxn) dominated the chart with 8 tracks each.
In terms of streaming numbers, “ASAP” achieved 3.6 million total streams, “Bahamas” garnered 2.3 million, and “POE” hit close to 3.4 million. The week also saw 11 new entries on the chart, with 5 coming from the album “Romeo Must Die.”
“More Love Less Ego” Reaches Milestone
Wizkid’s fifth studio album, “More Love Less Ego,” reached a new milestone by surpassing the 200 million benchmark on Spotify. It is his third studio album to achieve this following 2019’s “Made In Lagos,” and his 2017 EP “Sounds From The Other Side.”
Muyeez and Buju Rank High on Spotify’s Top Artists
The newest kid on the Afrobeats block, Muyeez, is the highest new entry on the Spotify Daily Top Artists Nigeria at number 84. He owes this feat to his collaboration with Seyi Vibes, on “Instagram.” The track jumped ten spots on Nigeria’s Spotify Daily Chart to become the most streamed song in the country as of May 1.
Meanwhile, Bnxn, (formerly known as Buju) continues to extend his record as the longest reigning act on Spotify Daily Top Artists Nigeria, now at 801 consecutive days and counting.
“Rave and Roses” Top all-time charts
Rema’s 2022 debut album, “Rave and Roses” remains the most streamed African project of all time on Spotify, (and across all platforms as well) amassing a colossal 2.3 Billion streams. This achievement places it well ahead of other major releases. It is more than double the next on list: Burna Boy’s “Love Damini” with 1.1 Billion, and more than the combined total of the aforementioned album and “African Giant” with 887 million streams.
Of course, a significant bulk of those numbers come from the massively successful single “Calm Down” with the remix and original version having 1.3 billion and 570 million streams, respectively.
South African breakout star Tyla and Nigerian musician, Arya Star are the only two females on a list dominated by men. Tyla’s self-named debut album sits in fifth position with 832 million streams while Arya Star’s “19 & Dangerous” rests in ninth place with 514 million streams.
