Lion Forge Entertainment has announced the upcoming release of “Iyanu,” an animated series set to launch in 2025 across various platforms, including Showmax in Africa, with streaming service available in 44 African countries, and Cartoon Network and Max in the United States.
Created by Roye Okupe, the Nigerian superhero series is adapted from his graphic novel series “Iyanu: Child of Wonder,” published by Dark Horse Comics.
The series is set in the mystical kingdom of Yorubaland and follows an orphan named Iyanu who must uncover the mystery behind her newfound powers to save her people from an ancient curse. The storyline draws from rich Nigerian culture and mythology, offering audiences a unique perspective on superhero narratives.
Roye Okupe expressed his enthusiasm for bringing Nigerian culture to the forefront of the global animation scene. “One of the reasons I started YouNeek Studios was because I literally grew up watching superhero stories on DStv in Lagos, Nigeria,” said Okupe. “So it would be an understatement to say that I’m delighted that Showmax will be introducing Nigerian children to Iyanu, a superhero who looks and sounds like them.”
David Steward II, Founder and CEO of Lion Forge Entertainment highlighted the importance of retaining African roots in the series. “Iyanu is a series that plays to young audiences everywhere in the world, but its heart and roots are in Africa, where it was conceptualized and created by Roye. This is why we’re so proud to announce a deal with Showmax to stream Iyanu in 44 countries throughout Africa.”
Busola Tejumola, Executive Head of Content and Channels, West Africa, MultiChoice, also commented on the significance of this development for African animation. “We are excited that African animation is gaining recognition and captivating audiences both locally and internationally.
“Iyanu” boasts an all-Nigerian voice cast, featuring prominent actors such as Serah Johnson as Iyanu, Adesua Etomi-Wellington, Stella Damasus, Shaffy Bello, and Blossom Chukwujekwu. The series aims to showcase Nigerian talent and storytelling on an international stage, bridging cultural gaps through animation.
Lion Forge Entertainment, known for its Oscar-winning short film “Hair Love,” is the production studio behind “Iyanu.” The series is spearheaded by Roye Okupe, the founder of YouNeek Studios, in collaboration with Dark Horse Comics, the publisher behind titles like “Hellboy” and “The Umbrella Academy.” The show is produced with contributions from several industry veterans, including David Steward II and Matt Heath from Lion Forge Entertainment.
The writing team includes Brandon Easton, known for his work on “Transformers: War for Cybertron” and “Marvel’s Agent Carter,” along with Emmy-winner Kerri Grant, recognized for “Doc McStuffins” and “Ada Twist, Scientist.”
As the largest producers of African content globally, MultiChoice is proud to bring this remarkable story of Iyanu that weaves the magic of our Nigerian culture with great entertainment to our customers on Showmax across Africa.”
