In what has been labelled an unprecedented move, Benin-born music star, Shallipopi (Crown Uzama), has taken a bold step into the music industry by launching his own record label, Plutomania Records.
The Prince of Bini street pop announced this on Oct. 18, 2023, on his X (formerly Twitter) handle @plutomaniapopi.
Debuting as the new signees are Divine Uzama, known as Zerrydl–who also happens to be Shallipopi’s younger brother–and Tega Boi DC, both burgeoning stars from Benin. These talented artists were already on an upward trajectory toward fame. Zerrydl’s recent single, “Puff & Pass,” has garnered an impressive 2.5 million streams on Spotify, a remarkable achievement. Tega Boi DC also boasts subtle hits of his own, promising an exciting future in the music industry.
This development plays out alongside Shallipopi’s recent singles: “Things on Things” and the controversial yet chart–topping “Oscroh (Pepperline).”
The music community was noticeably taken aback by Shallipopi’s announcement, even deeming it audacious, considering he had only begun tasting industry success six months prior. Some commentators were swift to draw a connection to the current influence of Mohbad on the way emerging artists approach record label agreements.
Audacious or not, Shallipopi has rightfully earned the title of a superstar. His unique combination of Afrobeats and Amapiano, infused with Bini culture, has propelled him to mainstream success, defying even his own expectations.
Shallipopi’s rise to prominence was acknowledged when he was listed among the top five fast-rising artists on Apple Music, coinciding with Nigeria’s 63rd independence celebration. Notably, he shared this recognition with ODUMODUBLVCK, another breakout sensation of 2023 who secured the “Rookie of the Year” award at the 2023 Headies Awards.
His latest move is proof of his plans to expand his music empire.
