Directing The Anniversary forced Prosper Edesiri Arhawho to confront questions about marriage he had never personally experienced. Although unmarried himself, the filmmaker says the project changed the way he thinks about commitment, forgiveness, and the emotional weight of long-term relationships.

The film marks Arhawho’s second collaboration with First Features, following his 2022 cinema debut, Cake. His latest project, a second-chance love story starring Anthony Monjaro, Linda Osifo, and Obehi Aburime, premiered on Prime Video in June.

Arhawho directed the film from its earliest stages of development, working closely with the writers to shape its emotional journey and overall creative vision.

Speaking exclusively with The Nollywood Reporter (TNR), the filmmaker says that before making The Anniversary, it was easy to look at struggling relationships from the outside and wonder why people did not simply walk away. Immersing himself in the story, however, gave him a deeper understanding of the emotional realities of marriage.

“When two people have invested years of their lives, built memories, shared dreams, and weathered life’s highs and lows together, that bond doesn’t disappear overnight. Even when betrayal or disappointment enters the picture, walking away isn’t as easy as people often assume.”

Arhawho says the experience deepened his appreciation for the complexities of love, forgiveness, and human relationships, leaving lessons that extended beyond filmmaking.

“It reminded me that the best stories don’t just entertain us… they deepen our understanding of people and the choices they make.”

Looking back, Arhawho says one of the most rewarding parts of the process was watching an idea evolve from script to screen and become something capable of moving audiences.

He believes cinema serves as a mirror through which society examines itself, which is why he is drawn to stories that encourage reflection rather than offer straightforward answers.

With The Anniversary, he says he remained committed to emotional honesty above all else.

“I stayed committed to telling an emotionally truthful story without forcing easy resolutions or taking sides. I allowed the characters to be human, flawed, vulnerable, and real.”

Ultimately, Arhawho hopes the film leaves audiences thinking long after the credits roll, encouraging conversations about communication, forgiveness, and the realities of love and marriage.

“I hope people walk away reflecting on communication, forgiveness, and the complexities of relationships. If it sparks conversations among couples, friends, and families long after the credits roll, then we’ve achieved what we set out to do.”
