Disney has provided the first glimpse into the upcoming sequel “Moana 2,” sharing a new image from the anticipated animated film during the company’s annual shareholder meeting. The movie is scheduled for theatrical release on Nov. 27, 2024.
The image depicts the title character Moana, appearing slightly older than in the 2016 original film. She is shown standing in a canoe holding an oar, with what seems to be a sea monster lurking in the background.
According to Disney, the plot of “Moana 2” takes place three years after the events of the first movie. Moana embarks on a new adventure journeying “to the far seas of Oceania and into dangerous, long-lost waters” with the demigod Maui and a new crew.
The sequel was originally conceived as a Disney+ series but was later upgraded to a theatrical release after impressing Disney CEO Bob Iger with the project’s progress under director David G. Derrick Jr.
Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson are set to reprise their roles as the voices of Moana and Maui, respectively, from the first film.
In a separate development, Dwayne Johnson previously revealed plans for a live-action adaptation of “Moana,” with himself continuing as Maui but a new actress taking over the titular role from Cravalho. The live-action movie is tentatively slated for June 27, 2025, though dates may shift.
Disney is building excitement for “Moana 2” as the follow-up to the 2016 hit that grossed over $690 million at the global box office and received two Oscar nominations.
