HBO has unveiled the first cast members for its upcoming ”Harry Potter” original television series. The production, which promises to be a faithful adaptation of J.K Rowling’s critically acclaimed book series, will feature John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Papa Essiedu as Severus Snape, Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch.
Mark Mylod, known for his work on “Game of Thrones” and “Succession,” will direct and executive produce alongside showrunner Francesca Gardiner. Rowling also joins the project as an executive producer.
One of the most talked-about casting decisions has been Essiedu’s selection as Severus Snape, which has sparked debate among fans. While many have praised the choice for its fresh and inclusive direction, others have criticized it as a deviation from the character’s original depiction. HBO has stood by the decision, emphasizing the series’ commitment to nuanced performances and character depth over strict physical resemblance.
The series is still searching for actors to portray the central trio of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger. Reports indicate an extensive casting process is underway, with over 30,000 young performers having auditioned, including for the iconic role of Harry Potter himself.
With Mylod’s experience, one can expect an exciting and authentic take on the magic world. The show is set to debut in 2026.
