Netflix has announced its upcoming series adaptation of Jane Austen’s beloved novel “Pride and Prejudice.” First published in 1813, the work remains Austen’s most celebrated, having inspired numerous film adaptations, Broadway productions, and literary reinterpretations.

Penned as a six-part limited series, it aims to stay true to the original writings of Austen who is renowned for her witty social commentary, strong female characters, and keen exploration of love, class, and marriage in Victorian England.

The streaming giant has already cast its lead characters, fueling excitement among fans of Austen who have waited nearly two decades for a major retelling of the complex yet endearing love story between Elizabeth Bennet and Mr Darcy. Golden Globe winner Emma Corrin will portray Elizabeth, while BAFTA winner Jack Lowden takes on the role of Mr Darcy. Academy Award winner Olivia Colman has also been cast as the hypochondriac Mrs Bennet.

British author and columnist for The Sunday Times Dolly Alderton will write the screenplay for the Netflix adaptation, with direction by Euros Lyn (“Heartstopper,” “Doctor Who”).

The limited series is executive produced by Alderton, Corrin, and Lyn, alongside Laura Lankester, Will Johnston, Louise Mutter, and Lisa Osborne. Production will begin this year in the United Kingdom.

“Pride and Prejudice” explores the complications that come with love and social status in Victorian England as a spirited Elizabeth Bennet and a proud Mr Darcy put their differing personalities aside and embark on an epic love story that transcends class and convention.

Over the years, several adaptations of “Pride and Prejudice” have received multiple industry accolades, including BAFTA Awards, a Primetime Emmy Award, a Peabody Award, Academy Award nominations, and Golden Globe nominations.

With this new adaptation of “Pride and Prejudice,” Netflix hopes to raise a new generation of Austen faithfuls.
