Shaibu Husseini, the Executive Director of the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), has called for improved storytelling and professionalism in Nollywood.
Speaking at the 5th Annual Nollywood Creative Minds Forum (NCMF) on December 10, 2024, in Lagos, Husseini emphasized the importance of moving beyond fleeting trends to embracing authentic narratives that reflect Nigeria’s diversity.
Delivering the keynote address at the event, themed “In Pursuit of Better,” Husseini acknowledged Nollywood’s remarkable progress, including a 120% surge in box office revenue this year and increasing global recognition.
However, he pointed out lingering gaps in storytelling, ethical standards, and industry collaboration.
“We are not just storytellers; we are custodians of our culture and history. Our stories must inspire, educate, and entertain while reflecting our unique experiences,” he stated. He also urged filmmakers to prioritize professionalism, embrace new technologies, and foster collaborations to stay competitive.
Husseini outlined initiatives by the NFVCB to support Nollywood’s growth, including capacity-building workshops, funding opportunities, and international collaborations. He highlighted plans for a “Producers, Exhibitors, and Distributors Lab” aimed at equipping industry professionals with essential skills to improve distribution channels and infrastructure.
The NCMF, hosted at Four Points by Sheraton in Lekki, brought together filmmakers and creative professionals to discuss industry challenges and opportunities. The forum continues to serve as a hub for fostering partnerships and shaping Nollywood’s future.
Shaibu Husseini concluded his speech with a rallying call for collective action, emphasizing that the pursuit of a better filmmaking tradition requires the active participation of all industry stakeholders.
