Victoria Eze, the screenwriter of recently released Nollywood romance film, “A Ghetto Love Story,” has shed light on the film’s production dynamics.
Directed by Daniel Oriahi, the movie is inspired by true events and follows the turbulent relationship of childhood friends Obinna and Stella, who must navigate the harsh realities of life. It is the first major project of screenwriter Victoria Eze.
Speaking exclusively to Pulse, Eze revealed that the film’s modest budget made it a production darling.
“We had a few titles on our table, but ‘A Ghetto Love Story’ was the most financially sensible option.” she said.
Originally, the team had considered a project titled “Scorpio,” but its narrative about the ultra-wealthy made it financially unfeasible.
“A Ghetto Love Story”s production, despite being cheap, was not without its challenges. The country’s economic struggles and soaring inflation forced the production costs to double.
The movie’s schedule didn’t help either. Eze revealed that the movie’s early announcement proved a grave challenge, especially as no script had been developed yet.
“It’s a different thing when you’ve done something already before you announce it but when you put it out there and you don’t have a cast or crew; nothing, it’s different.”
Despite these challenges, “A Ghetto Love Story” has been received with rave reviews and is going fairly strong at the box office with ₦21.2 million debut weekend.
“A Ghetto Love Story” was released in nationwide cinemas on November 22, 2024. Read our review here.
